Amherstには夜ついたので、モーテルのすぐ近くに風車と高速道路があることに気が付きませんでした。

妻と義妹Mっちゃんはまだ寝ているので、僕は早朝ドライブ。Amherstのダウンタウンに向かいます。

朝9時前になったので、モーテルに戻り、チェックアウト。Amherstの薬屋さんにMっちゃんの薬を買いにいきます。薬屋さん　Pamasave　では、高齢者用の電動式車椅子が売っていました。

 高速104号線、そして102号線を乗り継いで、Halifaxを目指します。
制限速度は時速110ｋｍ。交通量も少なく、非常に快適なドライブです。

 途中、有料道路を通過するのでいくらかと思えば、4ドルでした。高速道路に数千円もかかる日本では車の移動も高コストです。日本の高速道路無料化を夢見ていた3年前が懐かしい。北米の高速道路は、多少のひび割れだらけです。日本も完璧なメンテナンスよりも、すこし道路整備の質をゆるくして、高速道路を少しでも安くしてほしいです。

 無事、Halifaxに到着。湾をまたぐ橋にも通行料金がかかります。金額はたったの1ドル。

高速道路無料化について議論するのは、もはや無駄だと思いつつ、無料でなくとも、すこしでも安くする方法を考えてほしいものです。

All You can eatのお店では、決して注文をしないSushi Pizzaですが、このお店ではどうかと思い、注文。恐る恐る食べてみると、かなり美味しいSushi Pizzaでした。

私はカツ丼を注文

妻とMっちゃんは寿司を注文。僕も何貫か頂きましたが、ネタが新鮮で美味しい。さすがシーフードが美味しいといわれているHalifax。寿司も抜群でした。

デザートも本当に美味しかったです。

食事後、市内を散歩。下のお屋敷は副総督のレジデンスです。連邦立憲君主制のカナダでは、オタワに総督、各州には副総督のレジデンスがあります。

これは波でしょうか？子供達が滑って遊んでいました。落ちても平気なように、地面はウレタン素材でフワフワしています。

この退役艦の奥には、現役の大きな軍艦も公開されていました。

エントランスで入場料金を払い、展示会場へ。

 正面に大きな灯台のレンズが置かれています。

 この博物館の中にタイタニックの乗船名簿が飾られているのですが、どこにあるかわかりませんでした。ちなみにYMOの細野晴臣氏の祖父の名前が記載されています。

 ひとつひとつの飾りがすべて丁寧に掘り込まれていて、当時、最高の豪華客船のエレガントさが推測できます。

 乗客だった女の子用の小さな靴。彼女が生きているのか、亡くなったのかは不明です。

 そして女性用の手袋。これも持ち主の安否は不明です。

タイタニックの展示とは別に、船首の飾りが展示されていました。右の女性像です。

 博物館の奥には、塗装前の船首の飾りも展示されています。

これも塗装されてしまうのでしょうか？塗装前の状態のほうが良いと思うのは私だけでしょうか？

時計台から更に丘を登って行きます。

 丘の途中から時計台方向に振り返ると、Halifaxの町が一望できます。

 内堀はかなり深いです。

 石造りの頑強な通路にはドアが数箇所あり、中にも入れます。

シタデルの内部は広大な更地です。

 奥には大きな官舎？らしき建物があります。

 この大きな建物のドアも開放中。

 中に入るとInformation Deskがあります。

 この建物の裏にある石壁のドアも開放されていて、

 中に入ると、カナダの歴史を紹介するシアターがあります。

 そのほかあちこちのドアが展示部屋につながっています。

 もともと軍事施設なので、機関銃も展示されています。

 大きな建物から離れたところには、、

 窓もないひときわ頑丈な建物があり、

 中は火薬庫です。

 火薬庫の近くの部屋は、兵隊さんの戦術を学ぶ教室です。

 当時使われていた大砲も展示。

 とにかく塀にはドアがたくさんあり、すべてではありませんが展示部屋につながっています。

 こちらは兵隊の宿舎

 こちらは独立戦争の展示。もともとシタデルは１７４９年にケベック州とケープブレトンから攻め込んでくるフランス軍に対抗するために建てられたイギリス軍の海軍基地ですが、現在の星型の要塞はアメリカ軍からの攻撃に備えて１８５６年に建てられました。

この展示部屋は、独立戦争から現代のPKO活動までの一連の歴史を展示しているので、第二次世界大戦の展示もあります。 もちろん日本軍の展示も、、、、。

日本軍に関する展示は上の一区域のみ、そしてナチスの展示もあります。

 ハリファックス海域はドイツのUボートが活躍した場所であるため、ナチスに関する展示のほうが大きく取り上げられています。

再び、外へ。火薬庫の横にある登坂道から塀を登ります。

 塀の上には、大砲が展示。

 かなり大きな大砲です。

 大砲のすぐそばにある小さなドアの中には、火薬、

 そして弾が納められています。

 大砲の先には、

 港が見えます。ちょうどカナダ海軍の施設があります。

 大砲からシタデル内を振り返る。

 再び、入ってきた門から外へ

 出入り口の向こうには、カナダの国旗が見えます。

人々の軍隊に対する感情は日本人のそれとはまったく異なります。私はこのような国民的感情の違いを、日本にいるうちはまったく知りませんでした。海外の人に平和を語るには、この軍隊に対する感覚の違いを知ることは必須だと思います。

 店内の雰囲気。とても落ち着いています。

 ここのレストランでは、メインメニューを頼むとサラダバーとムール貝がお代わり自由。

 これだけでもお腹いっぱいになりそうです。

このレストラン。かなりおススメです。

すっかり日が暮れ、夜の港を散歩。軍艦もライトアップされています。

 夜遅くまで営業していた屋台　WAXMEN。

夜の港町はどこも魅力的です。
