Tom ThomsonとGroup of Sevenは日本人ウケしそうな歴史があります ／ カナダの紅葉シーズンに人気の小さな田舎町 Huntsvilleに到着。秋に訪れるのはこれで４回目にもなりました。

再び、ドライブ。紅葉の道を進むのは気持ちがいい。

車で３０分ほどで、Musukoka地方の観光町　Huntsvilleに到着。毎年、この時期に来ているので、もう４回目の訪問です。車が混み合っているように見えますが、そうでもありませんでした。

小さな可愛らしいお店が並んだ楽しい町です。すでにお昼。今日のランチは、下の真ん中のお店　That Little Place by the Lights で簡単に済ませます。

店内の雰囲気。ちょっとしたカフェの感覚で簡単な食事が楽しめます。

 パスタとピザを注文。どれも１０ドル以下ですが、味は美味しいです。

 レストランの隣のお店は、年中クリスマスグッズを販売する専門店。

 ちょっと町を散策。

 近くを流れる川にはボートが浮かび、

 小さなヨットハーバーもあります。

 橋は稼動橋です。

 もうすっかり秋なので、ヨットはありませんでした。

 カヤックやカヌーの季節もそろそろ終わりです。

 町の裏通りを歩くと、

 あちこちに大きな絵が飾られています。

 こちらはギャラリーです。

 カヌーに土を入れて、アレンジマムを植えています。水はけがちょっと心配です。

 このパブの壁にも大きな絵があります。

Huntsvilleやその周辺の町には、このような絵がたくさん飾られていて、町を散策しながら絵も楽しむことが出来るアトラクション　Group of Seven Outdoor Gallery　となっています。まるで宝探しのような感じで町歩きがますます楽しくなります。

 公園では秋のお祭りが行われていました。

 こちらのパブにも絵があります。

 この建物には、２枚も飾られていました。

 この建物は、観光案内所でした。

 この歴史ある建物が、Huntsville のTown Hallです。

 この建物正面で咲いていたベコニアは、お見事でした。

 Town Hallの横には、カヌーと画家の銅像。

 この人こそ、このMusukoka地方で自然画を書いていた有名な画家　Tom Thompsonです。

 1877年、オンタリオ州クレアモント付近の小さな集落に生まれます。生後まもなくジョージアンベイ周辺に移り、大自然中で幼少期を過ごします。青年時代は、ビジネススクールに通うなどしていましたが、やがて兄弟のいるシアトルへ。そこで商業画家として生計を立てます。シアトル生活も６年を経過し、トロントの「グリップ」に転職。その会社にはカナダ有数の若手芸術家たちが集い、週末になるとグループでトロント周辺のスケッチ旅行に行く生活を過ごします。トム・トムソンはムスコカ地方に赴き、そこでスケッチをし、トロントで絵を描き上げていました。この手法は、のちのGroup of Sevenのメンバー共通の手法となります。
１９１７年に彼は突然の死を迎えました。アルゴンキン州立公園のカヌー湖でカヌーで移動中に溺死をしました。カヌーの腕前はプロ並みのトム・トムソンの死は、殺人説や自殺説など今もミステリアスな事件されています。
彼の死から３年後、７人の友人が集まってGroup of Sevenが発足。トム・トムソン独特の画風と哲学を引き継ぎました。

Town Hallのすぐそばにも、Group of Sevenの絵があります。

当時、これらの絵は世間から全く注目されず、苦難の日々が続いていましたが、友人７名の結束と情熱でやがてカナダを代表する現代画家となりました。

車に乗り、移動。途中、Lion Lookoutによりました。

 反対側には湖。その真ん中には、、

 面白い島がありました。

 丘を下ると、

 右側に線路！

 そして左側に駅です。

 観光列車が走っています。なぜか日曜日は定休日。商売根性のないマイペースなところがいかにもカナダの田舎らしい。

再び、車中。この橋を渡って、

 右側に運河のＬｏｃｋが見えたので、駐車。

 ベコニアの植栽が見事です。

 こちらがLock。

 運河のとなりには、川が流れていました。この小さな川ではボートは運航できません。

 そこでこの運河があります。

 運河の向こう岸を見ると、、、

 カナダの国旗

 しかも赤と白のベコニアの植栽でできています。メープルリーフの細かなところもすべてベコニアで表現。これまたお見事！
