今日でP.E.I.とお別れ。Confederation Bridgeの料金所に到着。往復分の橋の通行料金を払うのですが、その金額が合計４０ドル以上。日本か！と思うような料金にびっくり。

 向こうに見えるのはNew Brunswick州

 Moncton郊外にある有名な坂を目指します。なぜこんな場所にCasinoがあるのか？という場所が目的地の

 どこの観光地にありそうなレストランとギフトショップがあるので、立ち寄ります。

 池にはカモが休んでいました

 そして観光地にはかかせないBeaver Tails

 まるでビーバーの尻尾のような形をした揚げパンのような御菓子

 Magnetic Hillがなぜ起こるのかを解説したボードがあるので、見てしまいました。できれば不思議な体験をしてから、見たほうがいいです。

 奥に進むと料金所。５ドルを支払い、中へ

 運転方法を紹介するパネル

 これが、有名な坂。Magnetic Hillです。緩やかな下り坂の先に、緩やかな上り坂。

 はじめに右車線を前進して、坂の最下部にある白いポール付近で左車線に入り停車。

そこで、エンジンを停止。そしてブレーキから足を離すと、、、、、、。
車がバックし始めます。そしてそのまま後進を続けます。後進している最中は、何が起こったかわかりませんでした。上の写真を見てのとおり、後進を続けるということは、上り坂をエンジンを停止したまま上っているということです。 あくまでも目の錯覚ですが、、、

Magnetic Hillにあるこのカバーブリッジ。普通に通り過ぎてしまう車が多いのですが、このカバーブリッジは北米で一番最後に建設されたカバーブリッジです。

ちかくには動物園と、

 すごく急な滑り台がある屋外プールもあります。

高速２号線から一般道を通り、次の町へ

 小さな町には必ずある貯水タンク。この貯水タンクには必ずといっていいほど町の名前がついているので、どこの町にいるかを確認するのに便利。ＧＰＳの時代には、画面に表示されますが、、、、

店内は明るく、カジュアルな雰囲気。

義妹Ｍっちゃんの料理は撮影するのを忘れました。子供連れでもぜんぜん平気な雰囲気なので、ケベック州からP.E.I.に車で移動する際の食事の場所としてもおススメします。

デザイン学校が隣接しているので、Soldiers Barracksの一階は、

 各部屋それぞれ、小さなアトリエになっています。

 Soldiers Barracks の斜め前にある小さな建物　The Guard House　の中は、

 衛兵の宿泊所と

 オフィスになっていたそうです。現在では、無料で開放されているちょっとした博物館として営業中。

 ダウンタウンのすぐ横をSaint John川が流れています。

 ほかにも歴史がありそうな古い建物が点在しています。

 町並みも、落ち着いた雰囲気でキチンと清掃されています。

 結婚式をあげているカップルがいました。通行者を止めて、車道の真ん中で記念写真を撮っていました。

 こちらはOfficer's Square。1785年から1869年までイギリス陸軍に、1883年から1914年までカナダ陸軍の駐屯地だった場所で、現在では公園になっています。

 衛兵さんたちが、パレードの訓練をしていました。

公園内にある York Sunbury Historical Society Museum。　1784年にイギリスによって軍の駐留施設として建てられ、現在では博物館になっています。

 ビーバー・ブルック卿の銅像も立っています。

州議事堂の周りは住宅街になっていました。政府らしきビルはあまりありません。

 州議事堂の正面、美術館の横にある小道を通って、セント・ジョン川方面に歩きます。

 入り口に座っているのは、情けない表情をしたライオンの銅像

 小さな小路です。

 そしてカレイ？のオブジェ。

 ２-３分でセント・ジョン川に着きます。

 川の遊歩道を歩いていくと、灯台に到着しました。

 椅子が並べられていて、市民が読書をしていました。

 灯台の中は、売店でした。

 灯台への入場料金を払って上層に行きます。

 セント・ジョン川での漁の光景。こんなに大きな魚がいることにビックリ。

 また蒸気船も通っていたようです。

 町の歴史を紹介するパネルを見ながら、最上部に到着。

 美しい川として有名なセント・ジョン川が目の前に広がります。

 よく見ると、、、。

 車まで移動。Officers Squareには、

オタワからP.E.I.まで車で移動すると、New Brunswick州はふつうは通り過ぎるだけです。しかも通過するのに約5時間。そこで休憩も兼ねて、あちこちの町を寄りながら通過することにしました。

 高速道路を下り、一般道を走行中。

 小さなダウンタウンを抜け、いよいよ大本命の大きな滝が目の前に広がり、、、、

 ませんでした。滝が流れている痕跡はあるものの、

 実際見た滝はこれ！

ナイヤガラの滝の90％ほどの水量が落ちる滝として紹介されていましたが、実際はご覧のとおり。
近くに案内所があったので、さっそく中へ。

 ギフトショップになっていました。スタッフに声をかけると、夏シーズンの水量は激減し、冬は凍結。
かなりの水量をみるには、雪解けのシーズンの５月と６月がベストシーズンだと言うことです。

 案内所の裏には展望台があります。

 そこから滝を見ようと思いましたが、もっと面白いもの？ヒトを眺めることに。

 滝の上をロープで綱渡りしていました。

 楽しそう！

 ダウンタウンに行き、橋を散策。

すぐそばには観光案内所がありました。やはりここも昔の駅舎を利用しています。

 だんだんと日が暮れてきたので、夕食へ。Tripadvisorで上位にランクインしていたレストラン Chez Charlotteで食事。

アットホームな雰囲気のレストランで、予約なしでもＯＫでした。

本日のメニュー

 チーズを生ハムで包んだ料理

 イチゴの入ったサラダ

さすが、フランス文化が強く残る町 Edmundstonの個人経営のレストラン。CharlottetownのＬＯＴ30
にも勝るとも劣らない料理です。　

スープはモダンでシンプルな器にはいっていました。内容は忘れましたが、とても美味しかった記憶だけ残っています。

 メイン料理のラム肉料理

 そして牛肉フィレステーキ。Ｇａｔｉｎｅａｕにある有名ステーキハウスStarlingを超えた美味しさです。

 デザートはシェフのオマカセで。フランス文化らしいクレープのデザート

車でこのあたりを通過するなら、ぜひ寄ってみてください。サーバーはかなり若い男性で、アットホームなもてなしをする将来有望な方でした。旅行が好きで、一度、日本にもいってみたいと話していました。
